122115 – 122315: Louisiana Christmas

We went and visited our family on the bayou for Christmas and had a great time hanging out with family.

It was quite rainy, and we felt cooped up most of the days, but when the rain broke, we got outside as much as possible.
And then we made gingerbread houses!

Judah attempting to look innocent, Ashe sneaks more candy into his mouth than he puts on the houses.

And while it rained we watched tv and played with toys.

And then sometimes while it rained we played outside in the mud.

We ate good and had lots of funny conversations.

And then the sun showed up on Wednesday and we stayed outside as much as possible.

We caught snails and earthworms.

And had a little more mud play.

And of course more scooter play.

And then Our Christmas, with wonderful toys and gifts.

We very much enjoyed our time with our family and as always hate to leave. But onto our next Christmas we go!

Devotional: My ‘Sermon’ // Lucy’s Birthday

Sunday, July 23, I had a strange privilege. I got to preach!

It’s… a lot harder than it looks.

I’m not even scared to speak in public. Doesn’t bother me really. I got to speak to the women at both of our campuses. It was fun. Here’s what I talked about!

Being a Godly woman and 3 things your husband needs from you. This is a brief summary of what I spoke about:

To be a more godly woman – you must be hard working. A hardworking woman is prepared and ready for things to come. She’s aware of what’s going on in her life and in other’s lives. She’s more concerned with the word than a tv show. She’s focused, and on the good things. She plans for the upcoming season, not just a couple of days ahead. She’s ready for whatever.

When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet. Proverbs 31:21

To be a more godly woman – you must be a life giver. Eve means “to live, or to breathe”. She was considered the mother of all. We are life bearers, as mothers, but I feel as though our job is also to bring life and life more abundant. Jesus told us that he can give us life more abundant and I feel as if we have a hand in that as well. The whole “If mama ain’t happy.. Ain’t no body happy thing?” We can sap a room of it’s joy in a minute. We have to be encouragers and warm and friendly. A godly woman would be.

To be a more godly woman – you must be fully trusting in your Savior. You plan, and you work, and do what you feel called to do, and know that Jesus will take up the slack. He’s got plans to prosper us.

And then 3 things your husband needs from you.

He needs your respect: No teasing in public, no husband bashing. Give him a chance to fix things, notice when he does. Don’t belittle him. Husbands instinctively respect their wives. They never tease us for gaining weight in public, and we women do it all the time. I read an interesting tidbit – men judge each other and feel judged based on the respect of their wives. That’s us ladies. Our husbands can feel better or worse about themselves because of us. That’s huge.

He needs you to want him: Sexually and in life in general. Men who were asked, “If your wife only slept with you because of her wifely duty and didn’t seem interested, would you be satisfied?” 90% answered No. They want to know that we choose them and continue to choose them. Ladies, we need the “I love you’s”, and the “you’re pretty’s” but men need to know that we want them to be with. Even playing! Guys like to spend time doing things they like, with their wives. For example – Wes told me the other day he only wants to go kayaking with me. I’m not a great kayaker.. (Shocker!) but he wants me to go with him.

And finally – He needs your support: 25% of men said they didn’t feel appreciated at home. That is our fault as women. We have to step up and let them know that we appreciate what they do. Even the little things. Taking out the trash so we don’t have to deal with it. Mowing. Helping with the kids. Working. A husband let’s his guard down most with is wife, and we have the unique opportunity to build him up like no one else, or cut him down like no one else. Use that opportunity wisely.

So you all know that I’ve been trying to get Judah to sleep through the night.. and that has been going.. poorly. Until.. Friday night when Lucy stayed with her Mawmaw. Judah slept so good. Like 6 hours straight. Which, isn’t really a long time, but considering I was getting up every 2.5 hours, that’s great! And once Lucy came home and was back in bed… back to waking up all hours of the night.

So… last night we put Lucy in the big bed up front.

And JUDAH SLEPT! So that’s what it was. Lucy, in her flopping around in her little bed, has been waking up my little light sleeper! So now.. We will let our toddler sleep in the big bed up front so that we can all sleep at night.

Front room has a TV. That’s the main way I coaxed her into sleeping in the big bed by herself. Last night right before she went to sleep she yelled for me. She wanted to sleep “In the little bed”. It was hard to tell her no… We may end up moving the big bed out and setting them up in different rooms. If it lets me sleep good.. you can bet that’s gonna happen.

Friday was Lucy’s birthday. Here’s what we did – nothing huge – just a couple of gifts and some cake. Their party will be this weekend. We’ll see how Lucy likes to share the gifts…

She turned three.

I can’t believe she’s this big!

And as requested – strawberry cake.

We gave her a kitchen set. This was made by my grandpa back in 1989. He and my mom built it and decorated it. Wes and I took it and refinished it. We painted, updated knobs, Papa J made a window in the oven, we painted the hinges. And I must say – it is stinking adorable. She got lots of food and pots and pans to go with it. She’s been ‘cooking’ for us a lot lately. There’s plastic food all over my house. Judah doesn’t like the plastic food.

Here’s me with the kitchen and my mom, brand new in 1989.

And Lucy and me with the kitchen, freshly remodeled in 2013.

I’ve had a few folks tell me that comparing Lucy to me in this picture that she looks like me. I see some likeness. She’s still super daddy, and super daddy’s girl too.

I love her serious wink.

And this little dude.

Now that I think I’ve figured out how to get him to sleep.. I guess I’m back to keeping him. It was touch and go for a few days there 😉

Hope your week goes by fast! (And given most people are off Thursday and Friday, I’m sure it will!)

Devotional: 1 John 2 // Merry Christmas!

Stay with what you heard from the beginning, the original message. Let it sink into your life. If what you heard from the beginning lives deeply in you, you will live deeply in both Son and Father. This is exactly what Christ promised: eternal life, real life! 1 John 2:24 MSG

This will be my last blog until January 1st! Just a heads up y’all. We’re leaving tomorrow and will be gone for a couple of days, so I’m going to take a little bit of a break and will continue in 2013. Wow. That’s weird to write.

This verse is so good though, it’ll keep you pondering until then.

The original message. Stay with that.

Don’t just think about the Gospel in your mind, let it sink down deep into your heart and soul. Live by it, daily.

Meditate on it. Dwell on it. The things the Son did for us, the things he is doing for us, and the things he will do for us.

This is what keeps us going as Christians.

We know we are in a race. And races aren’t always easy… but we also know that we finish first.

We may not finish each part of the race first, but in the end, our team wins. And that’s what Christ promises us.

In the end we win. We don’t lose out on that hope.

Keep that in mind. Dwell on that. He is with us, Emmanuel.

Praise God!

I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas. We had a fantastic Christmas. The lack of terrible weather in our area (I blame God 😉 was very much welcomed!).

Christmas Eve started as most days. I put Judah in the bed with Lucy to wake her up. She started putting the covers over them and they were both laughing. She said they were “playnin”.

Later that evening we went to my dad’s house for Christmas over there. Lucy got a GIANT teddy bear. At first she was a lil bit freaked out by it, but by the end of the night, she was tackling it like a football player.

Judah liked the bear too.

We came home, got in our PJ’s and went to bed to wait for SANTA. And…

He came!

Judah was chompin at the bit to get into his gifts.

By this time (2 Christmas’ under the belt) Lucy knew what to do.

Judah got a nice teething toy.

Lucy got an attitude and style.

Later we went to MawMaws for Christmas lunch. Which was great, as always. And Lucy did what she does best. Opened presents!

Yep.  A princess castle. So far – she’s played with this more than anything.

After, our bad weather, lightened up and we got a BEAUTIFUL complete rainbow right outside our door.

It was so amazing to see the storm behind the rainbow. There was lightening. And I caught it.

How cool is that?

And Lucy has also enjoyed her Talking Tom. You know the silly little iphone app? Well, they make a real one, and he’s pretty great. Looks just like the app. His mouth moves and everything. And Lucy keeps him on and mocking her.

His heart glows when he’s listening. How sweet.

Wesley got me some new workout gear (score!), a very nice sweater, and a can opener. I know, can opener? Well, if you’d been using the one I’ve been using, you’d be excited about a new one too. It’s a super nice one too. Pretty much set for life with this thing.

We’re planning our trip – going to help out at a youth camp and stop by and do some Christmas visiting with my other family. They live in Montgomery. I’m super excited about getting to visit them. Since Lucy’s been born, we haven’t been able to go see them. They’ve come to us, so we owe them a trip (or two!).

So we have one more Christmas to do and then we’ll be done and ready to begin 2013.

Hope you got everything you wanted!

Devotional: Isaiah 40 // First Christmas

True, the grass withers and the wildflowers fade, but our God’s Word stands firm and forever. Isaiah 40:8 MSG

The Word is a lot stronger than we ever give it credit for. I’m 100% sure of that. It is powerful. It is a double edged sword.

It also will never change, and will never fade, and will never lose its power.

There are some pretty awesome promises in the Word. You won’t ever know them all unless you dig in and find them 🙂

It is also comfort to the hurting.

Strength for the weak.

Honesty for the confused.

Truth for the believer.

It’s got all of our hopes in it.

It’s full of Grace.

It’s full of Joy.

It’s full of peace.

But you won’t find that unless you get in it.

We have promises of salvation, and suppling our needs.

Promises of protection and grace.

It’s all in there. We have to remember that reading the word and taking time to get into isn’t a hindrance to our lives. It’s completely beneficial.

Remember that when you read it.

We had our first Christmas last night. Our kiddos enjoyed opening their presents. It took Lucy a sec to get into it, but once she did, she really enjoyed herself.

Of course…

She was quite amazed at her reflection in the Christmas ornaments.

Judah loved his presents too 🙂

He scored a super cute hat and some awesome shoes 🙂

They also got some puzzles and a tea set, Lucy got some sweet boots, and some princess shoes. They also got a thing that’ll hold the iPhone in it so they can play with it without us having to worry about it busting. Pretty cute.

We got some super nice luggage.

Christmas is such a blessed time.

I also took a nap with my babies, I wanted to be close to them both. I woke up with a hand in my face.

Did you know a nap with 2 babies is twice as sweet?

And finally- a gift from Lucy to you!

She traced over my writing all by herself! I’m so proud. And she is too- she makes me sit about 3″ from her when she’s writing, to tell her “good job”. The girl loves praise.

Well, she and I both wish you a Merry Christmas!

Devotional: Isaiah 48 and Lucy’s Birthday Party

“There is no peace,” says God, “for the wicked.” Isaiah 48:22 MSG

There is one thing you can always be assured of – that God will always bring peace. With any decision I’ve ever made, I knew it was the one God wanted me to make based on the peace
(or lack of) in my heart.

He will never try and confuse you. That’s Satans job. God isn’t the author of confusion.

We generally let Satan do his dirty work on us when we stop paying attention to what God has in store for us, and that’s when we get all confused and worried.

But God as this amazing abundance of peace that he loves to give us.

Any time I’ve ever counseled someone, and I ask them about the time they really ‘got saved’, there is generally a phrase or description of a “weight being lifted off of them”. Seriously, people almost always say this.

That is the peace of God lifting the junky weighty sin out of your life and filling you with peace, his peace. His never-ending peace.

If you have never felt this peace, then you are missing out. It’s wonderful being able to lay your head down at night and know everything is going to work out. I don’t have to wonder. Even if bad gets worse, I know it will work out.

That’s peace.

And it is grand.

But you have to be a child of God to experience this real deal. There is no substitute for God’s peace. And there is no other source in which to find it.

Well.. We had a busy past few days. Lucy turned 2 last Thursday. I’m still a little shocked about it. I mean.. she’s two now. TWO. Not one. Two. And she’s pretty precious.

Her actual birthday (Thursday) started with some cuddling on the couch, with brother as a pillow.

Real comfortable for me.

Then we met Daddy for lunch and ate.

And played with straws. He’s such a good Daddy.

Then we had birthday nap. This girl naps hard.

I put her in our bed in hopes of a cuddly birthday nap… but she woke up after about 30 minutes, so I had to put her in her bed to let her finish. It could have been wonderful. But when she wakes up and finds a person near her.. she starts. With poking and slapping and digging. So my nap wasn’t very cuddly.. or nappish.

Then Saturday we had her party. It was cute. We had cake and banana splits.
Lucy Bea's 2nd Birthday

Don’t judge. I made it myself. It looks.. choppy… but it tasted good!

Lucy Bea's 2nd Birthday

Not sure if it was because her cake was on fire, or the fact that 20 people were staring at her on the table singing to her and grinning ear to ear, but she wasn’t a fan of this part. She didn’t blow out her candles either.

She started getting the hang of it when presents started getting opened, though!

Lucy Bea's 2nd Birthday

She got tons of CUTE clothes. I mean.. some REALLY cute stuff. And she got lots of really cute toys too! And lots of princess stuff. Meaning – this week… Me and lil girl are gonna watch Beauty and the Beast. She got a few Belle things, and so she needs to know who Belle is. Right? Of course! So.. One day this week, if you stop by – you’ll find me and Luc on the couch with a big bowl of popcorn and some cokes watching Belle and Ms. Pots. That will be a good day.

I got her a stroller… and she pushed that thing around for like 30 minutes.
Lucy Bea's 2nd Birthday

My dad kept letting her baby horse (it’s in the stroller) bite him. Lucy thought this was the funniest thing. So she kept making loops. And she’d get the stroller as close as possible to him to make sure he got his finger nicked by that little baby horse.

Lucy Bea's 2nd Birthday

I don’t get to see them very often; they live in Montgomery. And Lucy, now officially being a two year old, doesn’t handle car rides much over 3 hours. At 3 hours she begins to get… cranky. That’s me being very nice.

Besides her party – other things that went on…

I made Judah’s door hanger for the hospital 🙂

I found this Docker’s shirt, vest and tie set for 6 bucks. How stinkin adorable is this??

And I also found a coupon code for Children’s place online. So I ordered Lucy some cute sandals! I got them for like $3.19 each. Seriously. How cute!

And Lucy finally says “Cheese” for the camera. Except… it looks like this.

Not a pretty-cheese. It is, however, a cute-as-can-be-cheese. I’ll take it.

That gets you caught up!

If anyone has any ideas for things for me to do before Judah gets here.. I’m all ears. I don’t have any more parties to plan, or showers to wait for… So now.. I’m just waiting. And I don’t wanna lose my mind waiting so I’ve been trying to come up with a list of things I can do to make my time sneak by a little quicker. Of course, make my time sneak by without spending any money. I’ve done enough of that. So…. any suggestions?

Hope your Monday feels like a Tuesday!
